Barnard Castle is a market town situated on the banks of the
River Tees and is the perfect gateway to Teesdale.
The town occupies the site of an ancient Roman ford across
the river. The remains of Barnard Castle, built in the 12th
century by Bernard de Baliol, still tower over the river below.
The bridge below the castle, built in 1569, is still the main
access route across the river.
'Barney' is the affectionate name attached to this quaint
town with it's 12th century cobbled streets, yards and back
lanes.
Attractions include The Josephine and John Bowes Museum
- a French-style chateau house featuring a fascinating display
of European art collections, Wharlton Lido (recreation area),
Rokeby Hall (Rokeby Park setting for Walter Scott's 'Rokeby'),
Egglestone Abbey (12th century Monastery).
The Ideal location for 'antique hunting', walking, fishing,
bird watching, horse riding, picnics and sight seeing.
